Hair Loss and Politics: Joe Biden’s Hair Transplant

Politico.com is talking about vice presidential candidate Joe Biden. They’re not discussing his policies or evaluating his level of experience on foreign policy, and they didn’t even mention his running mate, presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Well, maybe that’s because Barack still has a full head of hair.

What the Politico article is talking about is Biden’s Helmet, the term they’re using to describe the senator’s current hairstyle. Apparently, Biden had a hair transplant when he was younger, with less than aesthetically pleasing results.. The initial procedure was performed a long time ago, and several hairstylists and hair loss experts who have followed Biden’s career provided remarks and commentary about the senator’s hairline.

Michael Beehner M.D., IAHRS member and Medical Director of the Saratoga Hair Transplant Center in New York noted, “When he had darker hair it was pretty obvious, he had larger plugs. With the lightening of his hair, it looks much, much better now.”

“Years ago, it was much more detectable,” said an anonymous surgeon, who also noted that the pattern of Biden’s hairline, “did not follow the normal path of baldness.”

Despite the current style that Biden’s wearing, most of those interviewed thought that his hair looked pretty good, as far as his hair transplant was concerned.

Although one of the stylists interviewed said that he’d look better with darker hair, the truth is Biden’s white hair is what helps to hide the older poorly transplanted hair grafts.

Biden most likely has had some refinement to his hairline since his original surgery, which probably occurred back in the 80s. Modern hair transplant techniques are more effective and completely undetectable to even the most discerning eye.

In any case, Biden’s not the only guy in this campaign who’s suffered through hair loss, but oddly enough, he’s the only one whose hair is being talked about over at Politico. Here the man is, running for vice president, and the commentary is all about his hair. Would the same critical analysis of the man be made if he had deep pock marks or if he was overweight?

  • Given the propensity of TV media to make people look bad, I’d not fault Biden for getting a hair “lift.” It’s either that or shave his head and look like an aging rapper.

As a 60 YO female, I’d like to know how Pelosi has such a youthful face. Her neck is wattled, but not her face. Frankly, I don’t think this is possible.

In addition, it’s my guess that Sen. Clinton will not appear face to face with Gov. Palin because Ms. Palin is far more attractive and far less full of invective.
