Dr. Straub received a BS in Physics from the University of Pittsburgh. He spent three years in the Army Security Agency, translating and interpreting scientific documents in the German Language. He received his MD degree from the University of Louvain in Belgium, doing his studies in the Flemish language. He completed an internship and a surgical residency at Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital, Johnstown, Pa. then did a three year residency in Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery at the prestigious New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. In 1971 he opened a practice in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, because he wanted to care for his aging mother for as long as she lived.
This practice consisted of doing ear surgery, cancer surgery of the head and neck, as well as plastic surgery of the head and neck such as face lifts, rhinoplasties, otoplasties, etc. In 1972 he began to do hair transplants, which was a part of head and neck surgery. After his mother passed away, Dr. Straub gave the extremely successful practice to two young surgeons and moved to California. Since October 1979 he as devoted his entire practice to hair restoration.
Dr. Straub has done more than 17,000 hair restoration procedures since 1972. He is one of the founders and past president of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery. He wrote the bylaws and the code of ethics for the society. He remains as chairman of the bylaws committee and the ethics committee. The code of ethics which he wrote has been adopted by many international societies including the American Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, the European Society of Hair Restoration Surgery and the Italian Society of Hair Restoration Surgery.
Dr. Straub has written many scientific articles appearing in the Hair Transplant Forum and other scientific journals. He has contributed three chapters to two textbooks on hair restoration surgery. He has been a lecturer on hair surgery at medical meetings several times a year for most of the past 20 years.
Dr. Straub’s intense interest in medical ethics was fueled by a period of time when he was under contract to work for a large hair transplantation business. He got the impression that the business was only interested in how much money they could make even if it was not in the patients best interest. As soon as he could legally break the noncompetition contract, he left and in 1985 he opened Straub Medical Center in Torrance, California where he could practice medicine in what he regarded as the best ethical manner.
Dr. Straub uses no salespeople or consultants. He does all of his own anesthesia and much more of the surgical procedure than is done in most offices.
Dr. Straub is married and has three children ages 17, 14, and 10. After his family, his hobbies are flying and running. He has flown his own single engine seven times overn the Atlantic Ocean and one time around the world. He has flown his own airplane to every continent except Antarctica. He holds one world record for long distance flight in a single engine plane. He has run more than 80 marathons and continues to run five marathons a year. In 1971, he was a member of the mountaineering party of four who made the first ascent of the 3/4 mile vertical wall beside Angel’s Falls in Venezuela which is the world’s highest waterfall.
Dr. Straub is board certified in Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
